Born Teo Hartoonian, Ras Teo is of Armenian heritage. He said he discovered reggae at age 12, listening, then collecting, records and albums by roots stalwarts like I Jahman Levi, Burning Spear, the Abyssinians and Israel Vibration.
The 'culture' sound he was weaned on can also be heard on his other albums: Mystic Morning, his 2009 debut, and Show I The Way released in 2011.
Working with Jamaican musicians, he stressed, was critical for his fourth album, which he hopes to release in 2016.
"Roots music is real 'cause you've got instruments an' there is a certain feel. The vibe is a lot stronger," he said.
