Big Mountain is an American Reggae/pop band, known for its cover versionof Peter Frampton's "Baby, I Love Your Way," which became a Top 10 hit single in the U.S. in early 1994 reaching number 6 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, number-one on Mainstream Top 40 and number 2 for the year of 1994 in the UK.

History

The evolution of the Big Mountain Reggae band started in the mid-80's as the California Reggae band Rainbow Warriors. In 1988 the lead singer Quino (pronounced Kino) joined as the lead singer of the band Shiloh San Diego, California. In 1989 Shiloh secured their first record deal and put out one album titled "California Reggae". In 1991 the band changed the name to Big Mountain which was the name of an Indian Reservation in Arizona. In 1991 the original line-up including Joaquin McWhinney "Quino" (vocals), Jerome Cruz (guitar), Gregory Blakney (drums), Lance Rhodes (drums), Manfred Reinke (keyboards), and Lynn Copeland (bass guitar). The band first reached the charts with the song "Touch My Light" in the late spring of 1993, receiving major airplay on mainstream radio stations. Radio station with the largest audiences West of the Mississippi took "Touch My Light" to #1 ( B-100 and Q-106 in San Diego, Kiss-FM, Power 106 in Los Angeles, Hot-97,KFOG and KMEL in San Francisco). In 1994 Big Mountain released "Baby, I Love Your Way" soundtrack for the [film],[Reality Bites], and remained in the Top 10 in the U.S.[Billboard Hot 100] and number two for the entire year in the [UK Singles Chart],and number one on the year end radio and retail charts in Japan. The follow-up, "Sweet Sensual Love" reached Top 10 in Spain and Japan and the album Unity sold over 1 million copies. Big Mountain's follow up single "Get Together" became a Top 5 hit in Brazil and Norway, (with the line-up now featuring Jamaican guitarist [Tony Chin] and drummer [Carlton "Santa" Davis] Big Mountain went on to be the top selling Reggae band worldwide, selling millions of singles and albums. The band appeared at both the 1994 and 1995 [Reggae Sunsplash] festivals in Jamaica. In 1998 Jamaican Drummer/Producer Paul "GrooveGalore" KasticK.(Shaggy,Maxi Priest,Diana King) replaced Carlton "Santa" Davis as full-time drummer,band member & primary Producer in the group. KasticK spare headed the production on the last 6 Big Mountain albums between 1998-2007. After 10 years of touring the band took a break After 2005's New Day. During the period between 2001 and 2011 Big Mountain occasionally gets together for Concerts and live performances for Concert Festivals worldwide and various benefit causes.

"Baby I Love Your Way" remains as Big Mountain's number one song.

Big Mountain es una banda de reggae estadounidense, muy famosa por su cover de la versión de Peter Frampton de "Baby, I Love Your Way," canción que los llevó a los primeros puestos del Billboard Hot 100 (#1) a principios de 1994.

La banda está conformada por Quino McWhinney (voz), Paul Kastic (batería, percusión), James McWhinney (voz) y el Jamaiquino Richard Goofy Campbell. Su formación provenía originalmente de una banda de reggae californiana, denominada "The Rainbow Warriors", a mediados de los años 80.

Big Mountain se formó en 1991 en San Diego, California, pero recién en 1993 arriban a los charts estadounidenses, gracias a la canción "Touch My Light". La canción que los consagraría sería "Baby, I Love Your Way" (original de Peter Frampton), que fue parte del soundtrack de la película,Reality Bites (GENERACIÓN X, donde actuaron estrellas como Winona Rider, Ethan Hawk, entre otros), se convirtió en un éxito de ventas internacional, alcanzando el puesto número 2 en el Reino Unido y número 6 en los EE.UU..

El disco "UNITY" también incluyó una versión en español, que le permitió a la banda disfrutar del éxito en ventas también en el mercado sudamericano. Este éxito fue seguido de 'Sweet Sensual Love ", igualmente realizado en inglés y español, aunque sólo alcanzó el número 51 en las listas pop del Reino Unido. UNITY superó la venta de más de un millón de copias en todo el mundo, algo que no fue superado jamás en discos posteriores de la banda.

El estilo musical de Big Mountain fue por aquellos tiempos de corte pop/reggae "comercial" o "estilizado", lo que llevó a llamarlos como los "The American UB40", en referencia a la conocida banda de reggae británica.

A pesar de esto, el éxito de la banda ayudó para ser considerados en los años 1994 y 1995 en los festivales "Reggae Sunsplash" de Jamaica. Desde entonces, no han podido igualar su primer éxito, pero han seguido tocando con una serie de artistas jamaiquinos, incluidos Sly & Robbie y Handel Tucker. El Tercer disco "Resistance" fue publicado en 1995, su single 'Caribbean Blue' no causo buena impresión, ya sea en listas reggae como de pop.
